Hey there,

A lot of what changes when we stretch is how much stretch the body is willing to accept.

The nervous system decides where “enough” is, and it moves that line slowly, for people who show up often and stay gentle. So a few calm minutes most days tends to work better than one heroic session.

This week is one short flow that visits the whole body, from the sides of the ribs to the hips to the shoulders. It takes about 5 to 7 minutes.

Stay with each move for 5 to 8 slow breaths, and stop at a gentle stretch.

A 5-Minute Full-Body Flow

1. Standing Side Reach

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart. Inhale and reach your right arm up and over to the left.

  • Keep both feet heavy and both hips level, and let the right ribs widen as you breathe.

  • Notice whether one side breathes more easily than the other.

💡 Equal alternative: the same reach, seated on a chair.

2. Supported Garland Squat (Malasana)

  • Place a block or folded blanket under your hips. Feet slightly wider than hips, toes turned out a little. Lower until you’re sitting on the support.

  • Bring your palms together at your chest and let your elbows gently press into your inner knees. Keep your spine long.

  • If your heels lift, tuck a rolled blanket under them.

  • It should feel like a stretch through the hips and ankles, with comfortable knees.

💡 Equal alternative: hold a sturdy chair or counter and lower into a partial squat, hips higher than knees.

3. Low Lunge into Half Splits

  • From hands and knees, step your right foot forward between your hands.

  • Pad the back knee with a blanket. Let your hips drift forward for 5 breaths, and notice the front of the back hip.

  • Shift your hips back over the back knee and straighten the front leg, heel down, toes up.

  • Hinge forward with a long spine, hands on blocks or the floor. Stay for 5 breaths.

  • Keep a soft bend in the front knee if the back of it feels sharp.

💡 Equal alternative: stand with your right heel on a chair seat and hinge forward from the hips, knee slightly bent.

4. Thread the Needle

  • From all fours, lift your right arm, then slide it under your left arm, palm up. Lower your right shoulder and ear toward the floor.

  • Keep your hips over your knees and your left hand pressing down.

  • Notice the twist in the upper back. Your weight shouldn’t rest on your head.

💡 Equal alternative: a folded blanket under your head and shoulder, or a standing version with the shoulder and ear resting on a wall.

5. Cow Face Arms with a Strap

  • Sit on a cushion or chair. Hold a strap in your right hand, raise that arm, and let the strap drop down your back.

  • Reach your left hand behind you, take hold of the strap, and walk your hands closer only as far as feels easy.

  • Lift your chest and keep your neck soft.

  • Most people find one side tighter than the other, and that’s useful to know.

💡 Equal alternative: a doorway chest stretch, forearm resting on the door frame.

Repeat poses 1 to 5 on the other side where it applies. If you feel pain in the knees, neck or shoulders, skip that pose, since discomfort means it isn’t the right one for you today.

Closing Reflection

Flexibility usually arrives quietly; we notice it when we reach for something on a high shelf and forget to brace.

Five minutes today counts, and so does five minutes next Tuesday.
